'An investor without objectives is like a traveller without a destination' - Ralph Seger

Investment Advice Process

It would be foolish to embark on a long trek with no purpose, any clear direction, or being prepared for any risks, setbacks and pitfalls that might arise. Your financial journey is no different and Sutherland IFA adopts an investment advice process to support you every step of the way.

Step 1: Preparing and getting started for the financial journey ahead.

The purpose of this initial meeting helps you decide if we are the right adviser for you; in other words we are in a position to help you and are a good fit for each other having outlined our services and fees. This meeting is at our expense and without obligation.

Step 2: Understanding and aligning your personal objectives to your financial planning goals.

A full and frank discussion takes place about your personal needs, aspirations, priorities and financial objectives or put another way, what you want to achieve with your money realistically over a set period of time.

Step 3: Understanding the trade-off between risk and reward.

Before deciding your risk profile that is mutually agreed, not unilaterally prescribed, we uncover the optimal level of investment risk that is specific to you. This looks at first, the level of risk you are prepared to consider in order to achieve your goals with the financial resources at your disposal; secondly, the level of risk you can afford to take; and thirdly, the level of risk with which you would be comfortable.

Step 4: Agreeing an investment strategy.

Once we have discussed and agreed your financial objectives and attitude to risk, an investment strategy is put in place to achieve the most suitable outcome. Put another way, the combination and investment types and funds in a portfolio is the most important aspect in attaining your your financial goals in return for the level of risk you are prepared to take over the long term.

Step 5: Selecting suitable funds for your investment portfolio.

Funds are selected from the whole of market but not before being analysed, researched and filtered out using a screening tool to find those that are perceived to have outstanding growth potential during upward (bull) markets. In major downward (bear) markets, we prefer to switch out of equities and ‘park’ in cash. We take a centralised approach to investment choice and work on the basis that a good quality investment selected for one client can also be good for another.

Step 6: Managing changes to reflect current market trends.

From time to time, it will be necessary to recommend fund switches in the investment portfolio but not before you have been informed and your consent has been obtained. Any adjustments to the asset allocation will not compromise your risk profile or financial objectives over the medium to long term.

Step 7: Getting together for ongoing wealth management reviews.

At least once a year, we get together to see if there have been any changes to your personal situation and circumstances since our last meeting. We will also revisit your risk profile and look at overall fund performance to see if it is still on track to meet your financial goals and objectives.
